How to Join the IAM
The Steps to Union Security

When airline or railroad employees want to win union representation, they must follow the rules specified in the Railway Labor Act (RLA). Congress passed the RLA in 1926 and extended its jurisdiction to cover airlines in 1934. It was the first federal law to recognize that employees have a right to join the union of their choice.

Authorization Cards

The National mediation Board (NMB) is the government agency that conducts union representation elections for airline and railroad workers. In order to apply for an election, the IAM must show sufficient interest from workers. This is done through the use of signed Authorization Cards.

Welcome to The Machinists Union

You have taken the first step towards a better life for you and your family by seeing what the Machinists Union can do for you.

We represent workers across North America, ensuring their right to power in the workplace. That power is demonstrated in guaranteed paychecks and pay increases, defined work rules and solid representation.

For more than 100 years we have fought for workers' rights and the benefits so often taken for granted. Benefits like sick pay, leaves of absence, bereavement leave, holidays, vacations, retirement security and healthcare.

Organizing a union in your workplace also strengthens the movement for social justice. In these difficult times, workers and their families benefit from solidarity and the powerful voice it can raise when programs like Social Security are threatened.

The Machinists Union strength can be seen and felt in everything that keeps North America moving. You too can be a part of the Machinists Union. Call the IAM at 1-800-998-3554 or send us an email.
